Check it Out: ’37 Ford House-Car

Wednesday, July 4th, 2012

George Sutton says: “Since my grandfather was a Ford Dealer during this time, I wonder if he ever had one of these in Inglewood, California?”

One of the first RVs ever manufactured was the Ford House-Car. They were made at the Ford plant in St. Paul, Minnesota, at a rate of six per year, according to Old Cars magazine. Pictured below is one of the few specimens still remaining, discovered by its owner in a garage in northern Minnesota. He says:

When discovered in a garage (under a heavy cover) in Northern Minnesota in August 2001, she had only 19,000 miles, and the owner’s manual was actually still the glove box in like-new condition! She had always been garaged and treated with much TLC as a collector vehicle.

The interior, all wood lined, was still the way it appeared in the ’30s and ’40s, complete with framed photos of the original owner on his travels (mainly to Florida) and his cabin in the North Woods, plus and other memorabilia from the era.

Built on the ’37 Ford Pickup frame and cowling (powered by a 60-hp flathead V8 with aluminum heads), the rear framing is all wood, with the metal skin wrapped around it. The roof structure, too, is all wood, over which the heavy, waterproofed canvas top is still very securely fitted. The structure of the body is solid, appearing from underneath to be all oak, and still in a remarkably unaltered, undamaged condition. The door frames are thick, solid oak, and oak is visible around the window openings (as on the four side windows in back) — though it is painted over. Read more…

LA to Seattle in an Airstream

Friday, May 6th, 2011

An MSN blog recently featured one of their employees detailing his experience with traveling in an Airstream. It’s an interesting glimpse into the RV lifestyle. Here’s an excerpt:

Recently I got to dive firsthand into a fiercely dedicated automotive subculture that’s rarely seen in the worlds of car shows and fan clubs: those who enjoy self-sustained travel in an RV.

I had some meetings to attend at MSN Autos’ HQ in Bellevue, Wash., and rather than fly in and fly out for a couple days’ worth of sit-downs I decided to make a road trip out of it and explore the Pacific Northwest for the first time. Luckily, I was able to nab an Airstream for the purposes. …

Taking a week to get from Los Angeles to Seattle is a decent amount of time — but to get there and back is another story; the total miles add up to a trip equivalent to making it two-thirds of the way across the country, which means a lot of miles behind the wheel. Luckily, the sheer amount of space in the vehicle — the massive windshield, the tremendous amount of headroom and legroom, the comfortable seats — makes it feel like you’re piloting a living room, and the miles go by far faster than in the comparatively cramped interiors of even the largest passenger cars.
